Free Travel with FlixBus for NEC and Young Scot NEC holders

The National Entitlement Card (NEC) is Scotland’s National Smartcard. You may recognise or know the NEC as your bus pass, library card or card from Young Scot (known as the Young Scot NEC). 

If you are entitled to concessionary bus travel (over 60s and those with a disability) or are aged under 22, you can use your NEC or Young Scot NEC to enjoy easy and cost-free coach travel with FlixBus within Scotland. 

What Routes Can You Use These Cards on FlixBus?

If you are eligible for concessionary travel or free bus travel for under 22s, use your NEC or Young Scot NEC for free travel on FlixBus routes within Scotland. Some of the routes where you can use these cards include:

• Dundee
• Dunfermline

• Glasgow

What Are the NEC and Young Scot NECs?

• The NEC (National Entitlement Card): The National Entitlement Card (NEC) is Scotland’s National Smartcard. You may recognise or know the NEC as your bus pass, library card or card from Young Scot. Concessionary travel is available to those over 60 or those who have a disability using the NEC. Free bus travel for under 22s can be accessed through the NEC (including the Young Scot NEC). • Young Scot NEC: The card is available to anyone aged 11 to 26 living in Scotland, with free bus and coach travel for under 22s. It offers discounts on buses and many other services. For more details, visit young.scot.

How Does It Work?

• NEC and Young Scot NECs on FlixBus: FlixBus accepts both cards on all its Scottish routes for free travel.
• Booking Your Ticket: You can book your FlixBus ride online or through the FlixBus app. When booking, just make sure to select that you’ll be using your NEC or Young Scot NEC.  
• Using Your NEC or Young Scot NEC: To use your NEC or Young Scot NEC on FlixBus, show your valid card to the driver or scan it on the card reader. If you don’t, you may be denied boarding.

Quick Tips

• Booking Flexibility: While you can always show up at the bus stop, booking online is a great way to make sure you’ve got your seat, especially if you're travelling during busy times.
• Card Validity: Check that your NEC or Young Scot NEC is still valid before you travel. An expired card means no free travel!
